I finally did it! This could be almost as addicting as knitting. Yikes!! It was nice to be crafty in a way that wasn't knitting or crocheting. I don't consider myself to be crafty at all. I love the pattern so much that I've made five pairs and plan on making at least two more pairs.

Here are the three I own:

This is the first pair I made. They are made with a semi bulky Joanne brand acrylic wool blend. Kind of itchy and the cables don't stand out very well. I made an identical pair for my youngest daughter.

The third pair I made. The second pair were for my mom and exactly like these. These were made with Red Heart "Soft Yarn" in wine. They are sooo soft, especially considering they are 100% acrylic.

These are the last pair I made. At 11am this morning, it was finished:

I'm not sure why the finishing corner is pointed and the cast on corner is flattened. I followed the instructions, decreasing until there were 4 stitches remaining, then knitting one more row before casting off the last 4 stitches. Oh well. It's cute. You can definitely tell the upper right hand corner (as you're looking at the picture) is the last corner...it's just a tad more stretched out (from the weight of the blanket, I assume) than the other corners.

Then to celebrate my being done with that monkey on my back (and to distract myself from the fact that I have one more baby blanket to do...) I cast on for this adorable Newborn Adjustable Hat. I made it with Red Heart "Soft Yarn" in Turquoise.
**The link is created using Archive.org since the link where the original (free) pattern was (frugalhaus.com) takes you to a site that no longer has free patterns (cheapknitting.com)**

It's a cute hat. The only change I made was instead of using a crochet hook to make a chain for the tie, I just made an i-cord using size 6dpns. I think it turned out cute too.

As if that wasn't enough, my 8yo son finally got the hang of knitting. He's cast on and is working on his knit stitch and is very excited to be the first boy in our family to knit lol. My younger son is quite jealous.

He's a natural!

And he's a "thrower" it seems.

I know have three knitting children, with the youngest (age 5) itching to get started :) My oldest daughter is creating her own pattern for wristlets and is about done with the first one. My youngest daughter just finished her own pattern for a GameBoy SP Cozy. It's a family FO affair lol.

Baby Blanket Blues

So I'm making my friend a baby blanket.
It's my very first knit blanket ever. It's not challenging at all. I'm using the pattern on the back of the skein Bernat's Baby Coordinates Sweet Stripes - Purple Blanket. It's very very easy.

It's just taking me FOREVER!!!!!!!!
I started it over a month ago and I work on it about an hour to two hours each day. I'm only just now past the halfway mark and am finally decreasing. It's a good thing the baby isn't due until May because it looks like it's going to take me that long to finish it!

Here it is just past the increasing rows:

**Small funny...my girls (who also knit) wouldn't let me knit this in public when I first started it. They said that on the circular needles, it looked like I was knitting a THONG for someone with a really big butt LOL!**

And wouldn't you know it, I volunteered to make my coworker a baby blanket too. Anyone out there have a baby blanket pattern that goes by QUICKLY that would be suitable for a boy? I was thinking big & lacy on huge needles would be quick, but my dilemma(s) with that is that the baby's fingers & toes would get caught in the "holes" and big & lacy doesn't quite go well for a baby boy.

Help a girl out? I wouldn't want to have to *gulp* crochet her a baby blanket just because it's faster....poor baby.

Think of the baby....

Made myself a hat

I love it!
I love cables!
I wish I could marry them.

KIDDING!

I do love doing cables though. They are so fun and look so impressive when you're done. I had dh take pictures of me wearing it, but I look like a dork because he had me laughing like a loon. Silly butt.

Here are the pictures anyway:

It's called the 3AM Blue Cable Hat. I did it in LionBrand WoolEase "Ivory Sprinkles". My only complaint is the "sprinkles" have a tendency to come off on my hair when I wear the hat. I'll just wear it when I walk to my boys' school in the afternoons. When I get home, the kids can take turns picking sprinkles out of my hair like the monkeys that they are LOL.

Mystery Skein Swap

Now that my partner has received her package, I can post about what I made for her.

At the beginning of the year, I joined Mystery Skein Swap. The idea behind the swap was to get a chance to make something for someone you (probably) don't know in person and get a chance to maybe work with fibers you may not have had a chance to work with before.

I was lucky enough to be paired up with Teri. She sent this beautiful purple wool, Cascade 220. I had never worked with this yarn before. It worked up beautifully, the color was just fabulous. I think it's called delphinium. At first I couldn't decide whether to make her wristlets or a scarf, or if maybe I would have enough for both. After swatching, I realized I would not be able to make both.

Having already made umpteen pairs of wristlets, I was ready to try something new. Plus, a scarf could be worn not only in the cold months, but as an accessory too.

I decided on the Karaoke Cable Scarf. I have to say I LOVE this pattern. It is so simple, yet impressive in it's row after row of twisting cables. It was so easy to memorize, I was able to put my pattern away after only a couple of repeats. In fact, most of this scarf was done while Knitercizing like my friend Isa aka Tricotine. I am not talented enough to do the treadmill and knit, but recumbant bike & knitting I can handle. I'm not even going to try knitting on the elliptical...I might lose an eye!!

Without further ado, here is Teri's Karaoke Cable Scarf :)

meme-ness

I am a
Sunflower

What Flower
Are You?

"When your friends think smile, they think of you. Don'’t forget to leave a comment that says ‘you are tagged’ in their comments and tell them to read your blog.

1. I cannot drink out of plastic cups unless I have a straw. Something about plastic touching my teeth that skeeves me out.

2. I have an extra wisdom tooth, for a total of five. Blog loser.

It just seems to me that I would rather knit than blog about knitting LOL.
I will keep the blog because I do like posting pictures of WIP and FOs. I just don't have much to talk about it seems.

A lot has been going on around here. I have four children that keep me quite busy. I also work on the weekends, double shifts...often 10-12 hrs per weekend day. And as if that weren't enough, I start back to college next month. It's definitely going to crimp my knitting time. Unless I can sneak my knitting into the classrooms LOL.

I will try, you can count on that.

I have been busy though. I've made several hats, three pair of children's mittens, half a dozen pair of cabled wrist warmers (they are addictive). I lost interest in the Branching Out as soon as I had memorized the pattern. Clapotis still eludes me. I think I'm bored with that too. I've made one sock...in my defense the pair are for dh and he has HUGE 11" long feet. Add in size 1 dpns and that's alot of B-O-R-I-N-G knitting round & round & round & round. Plus the wounds to my fingertips from poking the needle. OUCH. He may get the other one in time for Easter lol.

Here are a couple of pictures of FO's.

These were done with Red Heart (gasp! Acrylic!) Strata. I like it. The striping on the red/green/white/yellow/blue is a bit off. The mittens were a b*tch to make twins. But they are for my boys, who will no doubt get them filthy and maybe even lose them.

That is, if we ever get any snow!

Yarn Pr0n Friday!

I didn't forget, really I didn't. It's been such a busy day, I didn't even get a chance to knit until after 3pm *gasp* First it was the grocery store, then winter coat hunting for my 14yo dd, then to make an appt for my dog to get groomed. Then home, then BACK to the store to get my change they forgot to give me while I was there. Grrrr! Then back home. Just in time to run the dishwasher, empty the hampers, start a load of laundry take something out for dinner, and run back out the door to pick up the kiddos. During the wait for kiddos was the first chance I got to knit. I cast on Knucks for my 8yo ds. I've got all the digits of one done and am ready to start working in the round with the four fingers.

So anyway, my Yarn Pr0n Friday is full of "wish" pictures. Pictures of yarn I'd love to have for my very own :-)

Back to the Knucks :)

Felting Failure

I made this purse, intending it to be a Christmas present for 14yo dd, except it's a bust. I was following a LionBrand pattern for a striped felted tote using LionBrand Felting Wool. The felted size was supposed to be 14" x 9". I followed the pattern to a T, got gauge, blah blah blah.

A picture says a thousand words, so here's a couple of thousand :(
Pre-felt:

Post-felt:

As you can see, it felted vertically just fine. It's the horizontal part that didn't work so great. Even the handles didn't felt, they were worked horizontally (CO 7 and work in stockinette stitch until 35" long). So obviously this "Felting Wool" doesn't felt 'down' very well. I don't think I can salvage this one :(

If I were to use the rest of the LB FW I have I would need to cast on fewer stitches (making it less wide) to account for the lack of felting in that direction. Would that work?

*side rant- the stupid pattern said it would take three balls of each color and I used one of the green and one and a tiny bit of a second of the black.

I will say this, I will NEVER use LB FW for felting again. Has anyone else had similar issues with felting this yarn?

Twisti Wristies

I finally finished dd's wristlets. After trying out a few patterns and not finding them to suit my needs, I decided to just wing it. I think they turned out pretty well. Yes, they are a hideous green/silver Red Heart Sport acrylic (her choice, not mine - more proof that a 14yr old's taste is all in her mouth), but I like the finished product. The inspiration for the twists came from a dishcloth pattern, I don't know the author though.

Here they are:

And a close-up:

Pattern:
size 4 double pointed needles, set of 4
Sport weight yarn

Twist 1 Right: Knit next two stitches together and leave them on the left needle. Knit in the first stitch (between the two knit together), slipping both stitches off the needle.

Cast on 60. Divide evenly among 3 needles (20,20,20).
Ribbing: K2, P2 around. Repeat until ribbing measures 1/2".
Knit two rounds.

Twists:
Rnd 1: T1R, P2. I haven't posted in MONTHS.

We've had a lot of changes 'round here and it took some getting used to. Plus, I have found that I am a "seasonal knitter". I just cannot get the motivation to knit when it's 90*+ outside and not much cooler inside (no A/C).

ANYWAY.

I just finished dh's sweater. It's Baseball from Knitty.com. I did it in TLC Cotton Plus in "Winter Sage" I think it was called. The color has been discontinued. Thank goodness I bought enough of it lol.

Baseball was a lot of firsts for me. This was my first adult-sized sweater. Ever. It was also my first time cabling. It was also my first time seaming with the mattress stitch. The cables & the mattress stitch were far less intimidating to do than they were to read about or watch being done on videos from KnittingHelp.com. The only parts that really gave me an issue were where the tops of the sleeves join the front & back of the sweater and where the collar joins at that same point. It looks a little awkward to me, dh says it's only a little snug in the shoulders. He does have wide shoulders though *swoon*. The sweater makes him look like he has skinny little arms lol. He doesn't, but it looks funny. I think that's the cabling down the sleeve.

Without further ado, here he is...trying not to look like a dork and not quite succeeding.

And here is a close up of the cables:

FYS 2006

FLASH YOUR STASH!!
This took me forEVERRR! Between kids doctors appts (I have two of my four children with pneumonia now) and the kids having yesterday off from school, it doesn't make much time for knitting. I get a lot of my knitting done in the van while waiting for them all to get out of school (four kids in four different schools letting out at four different times makes for lots of knitting time lol).

Anyway, here's the clapotis:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v455/prfectprincess/clapotis1.jpg

It's curling at the bottom, is that normal? Something that will come out with blocking? Don't you love my "stitch markers" lol. I don't have any on hand and didn't want to wait until I got some...not to mention I can't fathom spending $5 on 10 little plastic rings! I'd rather make my own pretty ones with beads!! Something else that's on my "to try" list.

Here's a close up:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v455/prfectprincess/clapotis2.jpg

The color doesn't photograph well, it's called "winter white". This yarn is soooo soft! I love it! I think I'm going to go back & get some more for baby sweaters. Or maybe even a sweater for myself :)

Ribbit ribbit!

So I frogged the Monthly Dishcloth KAL. Both of them. I was doing one in red varigated and solid white that was looking like a Starlight Mint. Why did I frog them? Because the darned pattern requires sewing the darned circle together. I can barely make myself sew together a knitted/crocheted sweater...I sure as heck am not sewing a dishcloth for cripes sake!

I guess if I want to do a round dishcloth, I'll do the Double Flower which keeps it in the round by using dpns.

This week has been quite the week for building stashes. I won an auction on Ebay for over 30 pairs of knitting needles. Oh my goodness!!! There were ALOT of needles there! I now have a pair of each size from size 0 to size 10 1/2 (US) in straights. In all sizes except size 4, I have both 14" and 10" long needles. AND I now have circulars in ALL sizes up to size 10 1/2. There were even enough doubles to give my mom two pairs of each size except size 0 and size 4, as well as a few circulars (sizes 6 and 8) for good measure.

Then my mom mentioned there's a new store that's like a dollar store, everything there is $1 or less and they have YARN!! So I went, fully prepared for cheapy novelty yarn...but no! They had nice yarn! Lionbrand Wool-ease, TLC Cara Mia (LOVE this stuff), TCL Cotton Plus, Red Heart in various kinds from baby fingering to the Plush stuff... $1/skein! I bought 11 skeins. Yikes!! I'd really like to go back & gets some more of the TLC Cara Mia stuff. That is sooo soft! I got enough for my clapotis and I've already started it! Finally, I'm making something for myself :)

Podcasts

I've added a list of the knitting podcasts I listen to when I remember/have time. I really need to remember to upload them to my iPod so I can listen to them anywhere rather than try to hear them on the laptop (read: crappy laptop speakers).

We are now halfway through the Monthly Dishcloth KAL and I started a second one. I've been wanting to attempt a round dishcloth but have been a little nervous about it. I guess this is called "short rows"? Either way, it's turning out wonderfully! I think the next one I will do in alternating varigated and solid panels.
Have a looksee:

I'm still working on those wristlets. They were kind of boring so I changed it up by adding ribbing with mock cables (T1R). It's still tedious lol. But my dd wants them, so I'll keep plugging away.

The crocheted purses are a nice break in the monotony. I've made three so far. The baby socks I haven't picked up at all. They are boring me too.

Maybe I'm in a knitting rut?

OH! I did something a little adventurous! I went to a couple of thrift stores and found some sweaters to dismantle and reuse for other projects. I found a lovely red/orange/pink turtleneck in 100% lambs wool (from The GAP) and two 100% cotton sweaters. So far, the wool sweater seems to be the easiest to dismantle. The cotton is NOT cooperating. One is coming off in little pieces rather than unwinding row by row. Dangit! I really liked that one too, it was kind of a shiny cotton. I was *hoping* it might be enough for a Clapotis. *sigh*

5 Hours Baby Sweater

Okay, here is the 5 Hours Boy Sweater, all sewn and ends woven in (my least favorite part). It's made with Bernat Baby Coordinates in Blue Bon Bon:

And the Piece of My Heart Dishcloth I finished on Friday, it's not a very good picture, I think I'll try to scan it later. I had started a different pattern and didn't like it much. It was poorly written and full of errors (I'm beginning to wonder if I could make a career out of editing patterns lol). But this one is fabulous! And too cute! It's done in Caron Wintuk Soft Lilac and scrap white acrylic.

First it's a purse:

Then you turn it inside out and it's a cradle:

I've already started a second one in yellow :)

Couldn't resist

You are Dishcloth Cotton.
You are a very hard worker, most at home when

you're at home. I'm not very good at getting pictures of works in progress (mostly because I have so many going at once). I've recently finished the Quick Baby Sweater which is another version of the 5 Hours Baby Sweater. The QS pattern is pretty full of errors, but I've come to expect it from free patterns. I also did one of the Baby Boy 5 Hours Baby Sweater which I liked ALOT better, very well written. I decided to forgo putting the unworked stitches on a stitch marker while working the sleeves and just left them on the needles as instructed in the QS pattern. It was much easier than trying to get the stitches back on the needle. I'd like to try another one with smaller needles...I wonder if it would work if I used needles half as small and just cast on twice as many stitches...hmmmm??? I like the pattern, but I'd like to make it a bit closer knit. I really like knitting it all in one peice because I DETEST sewing the pieces together.

On the needles/hook, I currently have:

Piece of my Heart Dishcloth ready to bind off.

Cradle Purse (crocheted) which is FULL of errors...the bain of my existance lol.

Kat's Paws Wristlets

And a bajillion patterns I want to make tempting me :)

*waves*

My first post in my first knitting/crochet blog!

What can you expect to see here.... You can expect to see lots of pictures (LOTS of pictures) of my works in progress (WIPs) and completed pieces. You can expect lots of yakking about knitting, crocheting, needles, hooks, yarn, patterns, etc. You can probably expect a little complaining or whining about how a pattern is not working out or how I can't find the newest color/fiber of a certain yarn.

For now, this is all you get :P
